The Biden administration has continued to stay true to their pre-election mandate of tackling the U.S. immigration policies and amending them for the benefit of the people that need it. On February 24, 2021 Joe Biden issued a proclamation revoking the Trump enacted policy which prevented the issuance of new green cards. Proclamation 10014 and 10052 barred entry to the U.S. on the account of the growing pandemic and the need to protect the U.S. people and the U.S. economy.

The restriction enacted in March was to last until December 2020, however, due to the changes in administration the restriction has subsequently lasted until February, 2021. While president Biden has revoked the restriction which covered the issuance of U.S. green cards, his administration has yet to address the issue surrounding work related visas. This means that only the ban on immigrant visas has been lifted and the ban on non-immigrant visas is still in effect and will expire on March 31, 2021.

The restriction of issuance of green cards has caused an increase in the backlog of family issued visas. It has been revealed that there are now 473,000 unprocessed applications that require a visa to enter the U.S.

The Biden administration has further directed the U.S. secretary of state, secretary of homeland security, and the secretary of labor to “review and address any regulations, orders and policies that developed pursuant to the Trump ban.” During the announcement of the revocation of the ban, Biden expressed that closing the door on immigration is not the answer to advancing the interests of the United States. It does however harm the industries that are reliant on external talents. This is an indication on how Biden is constantly trying to change the narrative around immigration and immigrants in the U.S. He has taken an approach of inclusivity and providing insightful information as to how valuable immigration is to the U.S. economy.

These previous prohibitive changes in immigration policy have not only been a disruption to businesses in and around the U.S., and the U.S. economy. They also have affected families that want to reunite but are prohibited by the travel bans. During the four years of the Trump administration they implemented policies and regulations that have gravely changed the way in which immigrants are perceived and received in the United States. They filled the media with comments that looked to alter the view of U.S. citizens on foreign nationals and in some cases incited violence. However the tide has turned and evidently the Biden administration has been relentlessly trying to change these policies and regulations while also enacting legislation (The No Ban Act) that will prevent his successor from making any discriminatory bans.
